Welcoming Spring: What to Watch for This Season

As the snow begins to melt and longer days return to Yukon, many of us are eager to get back outside—whether that’s hiking, gardening, or spending time on the land. Spring is also an important time to start thinking about invasive species.

Invasive species are plants, animals, and organisms that are introduced to an area where they don’t naturally occur. Once established, they can spread quickly and disrupt local ecosystems, impact wildlife habitat, and even affect livelihoods.

Why Spring Matters

Spring is one of the best times to spot invasive species early. As plants begin to emerge, it’s easier to notice unfamiliar growth before it becomes widespread. Early detection plays a key role in preventing long-term impacts.

If you’re out walking or working on the land, keep an eye out for:

  • Unfamiliar plants growing in clusters

  • Species appearing in disturbed areas like roadsides or trails

  • Plants that seem to spread rapidly compared to others nearby

What You Can Do

You don’t need to be an expert to make a difference. Small actions can have a big impact:

  • Learn to recognize common invasive species in your area

  • Report anything unusual so it can be assessed early

  • Clean your gear, boots, and equipment to avoid spreading seeds

  • Share information with your community

Building Awareness Together

At YISC, we believe that prevention starts with awareness. The more people who know what to look for, the better chance we have of protecting Yukon’s ecosystems.

If you’re interested in learning more, consider taking our Spotter’s Network course or reaching out to us with questions. Whether you’re new to the topic or already involved, there’s a role for everyone in this work.
